Sandblasting paint can generate airborne particles and can create significant lead-dust hazards when lead-bearing coatings are present. Abrasive removal of lead-bearing coatings may require extensive containment and environmental controls under the project specification, worker-protection plan, and applicable rules. SSPC Guide No. 6 is one industry reference that may be specified for containment design; the required class and controls depend on the project. Containment infrastructure can materially increase project cost.

Chemical paint strippers avoid abrasive-media dust, but they can create chemical-stripper sludge, rinse residue, or solvent waste that requires characterization and disposal. Dwell time, ventilation, neutralization, cleanup, and substrate preparation depend on the product and project.
Laser parameters can be adjusted for selective or multi-layer coating removal. Pass count, removal rate, heat input, and substrate response depend on the coating system, thickness, material, geometry, and test area.

Source capture, HEPA filtration, lead-safe work practices, containment, waste characterization, manifests, and other controls remain project-specific. RRP certification does not replace lead-abatement or other requirements when those rules apply.
Laser cleaning does not rely on chemical-stripper dwell time and adds no solvent or rinse water. The required number of passes, production rate, cleanup, and any final surface-preparation steps depend on the coating and substrate.

How are emissions and lead-containing debris controlled during laser paint removal?
Laser paint removal can generate airborne emissions and particulate from the coating being removed, so source capture and HEPA filtration are used as part of the control plan. The process does not create an abrasive-media dust cloud or add blast media to the waste stream. Abrasive-blasting containment is not required, but lead-safe containment, controlled access, ventilation, laser-safety barriers, building protection, waste handling, and other site-specific controls may still be required based on the coating, work area, occupancy, and applicable rules.
What does paint stripping cost per square foot with laser vs. sandblasting?
Pricing depends on coating type and thickness, substrate, access, production rate, required controls, testing, and finish specification. Abrasive blasting may also add blast-media containment, recovery, cleanup, testing, and disposal costs. What substrates can you strip paint from?
Steel, aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass, stone, brick, concrete, and wood. We calibrate laser parameters for each substrate. On delicate materials such as historic brick and ornamental ironwork, a test area is used to establish settings and confirm the acceptable surface response before production work.
