The Challenge

Surface preparation is the critical path item on most coating and structural projects. The GC needs a clean substrate before the coating crew, the welding crew, or the inspector can proceed. Traditional blast contractors add days to the schedule: mobilization, containment setup, blasting, cleanup, and disposal. On urban job sites, add permitting time for air quality and noise.
The documentation burden falls on the GC. SSPC cleanliness verification, hazardous waste manifests for lead-bearing blast media, OSHA silica exposure monitoring records, and containment compliance documentation all need to be on file before the next trade can mobilize. A missing document holds the entire schedule.

Laser cleaning can shorten setup by avoiding blast-media delivery, recovery, and blast-media containment. It also avoids silica controls tied to silica-containing abrasives. Removed coatings, captured contaminants, and filters remain subject to project-specific characterization, disposal, and any required waste documentation. Mobilization and next-trade timing depend on site access, safety controls, and the project schedule.

Structural Steel Preparation

Laser cleaning does not generate a blast-media dust cloud or require blast-media containment. Air, noise, environmental, occupancy, and confined-space requirements remain site- and project-specific. The Class 4 laser requires a controlled laser safety zone, and contaminant-specific source capture or containment may also be required.
