Refinery and pipeline surface preparation requires site-specific review for hazardous-area classification, ignition sources, ventilation, equipment suitability, and permit requirements. Laser cleaning can be evaluated as a non-abrasive option only after the specific equipment and work plan are approved for the location.

The Challenge

Refinery and petrochemical environments prohibit open flames, sparks, and static-generating activities in classified hazardous areas. Sandblasting generates sparks on impact with ferrous metals. Manual grinding generates sparks and metal particulate. Chemical cleaning generates VOCs. All three require hot-work permits and extensive safety protocols.
Laser cleaning produces no grinding or impact sparks and no abrasive media. The laser beam is contained and the vaporized material is captured by HEPA filtration. It is still a hot process, so work in classified areas is planned around site hot-work permits and hazardous-area controls.

Pipeline Coating Removal

Strip pipeline coatings for inspection, recoating, and repair with no abrasive media and no grinding sparks, planned around site hot-work controls. Laser cleaning works on API 5L and API 5CT grades. Prepare surfaces for FBE, 3LPE, and liquid epoxy recoating.

Heat Exchanger Tube Cleaning

Remove scale, fouling, and corrosion from heat exchanger tubes and tube sheets. In-place cleaning without pulling the bundle. Restore thermal transfer efficiency.
