The Challenge

Abrasive blasting of lead-bearing bridge coatings can require SSPC Guide No. 6 blast-media containment, recovery, and decontamination controls. The required containment class and cost depend on the coating, structure, location, specification, and applicable rules. Laser cleaning avoids abrasive blast media, but project-specific lead, emissions, worker-protection, traffic, waterway, and access controls may still apply. The spent abrasive media used in blasting can become contaminated by lead, chromium, or other constituents from the removed coating. Whether it is hazardous—and whether TCLP testing, manifests, or regulated disposal are required—depends on the coating, test results, generator status, and applicable rules. Large bridge projects can also create substantial volumes of spent grit.

Laser cleaning avoids spent abrasive media and the containment, recovery, and blast-media disposal associated with it. Airborne emissions are controlled with source capture and HEPA filtration. Removed coatings, captured particulate, and filters must still be characterized and managed according to the actual material and project requirements. Surface acceptance and recoating timing remain subject to the project specification and inspector.

Yes. Laser cleaning can prepare bridge surfaces for project-specified inspection and recoating. Final acceptance should be verified against the project specification, inspection method, and coating system requirements.

We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm for RRP-covered work within the certification’s defined scope. For bridge coatings, project-specific lead, environmental, worker-protection, and DOT requirements still apply. Laser cleaning adds no abrasive media, so there is no spent abrasive requiring blast-media TCLP testing or disposal manifests. Removed coating, captured particulate, and filters may still require testing, manifests, and regulated disposal based on their classification.
