Laser vs. Chemical Stripping
Chemical stripping means solvents, dwell time, hazardous sludge, and VOC exposure. Laser cleaning eliminates all four.

Chemical paint stripping uses methylene chloride, NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone), caustic soda, or proprietary solvent blends to dissolve coatings. The chemistry works, but the process creates four problems that laser cleaning avoids entirely.
First, dwell time. Chemical strippers require 2-24 hours of contact time depending on coating thickness and chemistry. During this window, the work area is occupied, fume-generating, and unproductive. On a multi-day project, the cumulative dwell time exceeds the actual stripping labor.
Second, hazardous waste. The spent chemical sludge contains the dissolved coating (which on pre-1978 buildings includes lead) suspended in solvent. This waste stream requires hazardous waste classification, manifesting, transportation by licensed haulers, and disposal at permitted facilities. In New Jersey, the disposal logistics and cost for chemical stripping waste are comparable to sandblast media disposal.
Third, residue. Chemical strippers leave solvent residue on the substrate that must be neutralized before re-coating. Incomplete neutralization causes coating adhesion failure. On porous substrates (stone, brick, concrete), chemical residue migrates into the material and resurfaces as staining or efflorescence months later.
Fourth, worker exposure. Chemical strippers generate VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that require respiratory protection, chemical-resistant gloves and suits, and ventilated work areas. OSHA permissible exposure limits for methylene chloride are stringent (25 ppm 8-hour TWA), and compliance requires air monitoring on every job.
