Three Methods, Three Cost Structures

Contractors in NJ, NY, and PA typically evaluate three surface preparation methods: traditional dry sandblasting, dustless (wet) blasting, and laser cleaning. The hourly rate comparison tells one story. The total project cost tells a different one.

Traditional sandblasting runs $45 to $80 per hour (HomeGuide 2026). Dustless blasting runs $1.30 to $3.50 per square foot (Angi 2026), which translates to roughly $75 to $150 per hour depending on throughput. But the rate card does not include media, containment, disposal, or compliance costs. Those line items change the math on every project involving lead paint, indoor surfaces, delicate substrates, or regulated waste streams.

What Dustless Blasting Solves and What It Does Not

Dustless blasting mixes water with abrasive media to suppress airborne dust. This addresses the silica exposure problem that drives OSHA-aware planning costs on dry sandblasting jobs. It also reduces the visible dust cloud, which matters on urban job sites and near occupied buildings.

What dustless blasting does not solve: it still generates spent media. On lead-painted surfaces, that wet slurry contains lead particles and is classified as hazardous waste. The disposal costs are comparable to dry blast media disposal. TCR Coatings documents hazardous waste disposal at $1,000 per ton minimum for TCLP-fail material. The wet slurry also creates contaminated wastewater that must be contained and disposed of under EPA discharge rules.

Wet or ‘dustless’ blasting can still require containment, wastewater controls, and lead-dust controls on lead-bearing coating projects. Where Blasting Still Wins

For most commercial and industrial projects in the tri-state, at least one cost-multiplying factor is present. When it is, laser cleaning delivers lower total project cost despite the higher hourly rate.

The Bottom Line

Dustless blasting is a better sandblasting. Laser cleaning is a different category. When your project involves lead paint, indoor surfaces, delicate substrates, or regulated waste streams, the total cost math favors laser.
