NDT Surface Preparation

Non-destructive testing works only on a clean, undisturbed surface. Paint, scale, rust, and coating hide the defects your inspector needs to find. Laser cleaning strips the surface to bare metal for penetrant, magnetic particle, and ultrasonic inspection with no metal smearing and no residue. Mobile across NJ, NY, and PA.

The Problem with Traditional Methods

Surface-breaking cracks are the defects inspection exists to catch. Grinding and blasting smear soft metal across the crack mouth and close the opening. The inspector reads a clean pass on a part with a live flaw. A missed crack shows up later as a weld failure or a recalled lot.

Chemical strippers and solvents leave a film. Penetrant inspection depends on dye wicking into open defects, and residue blocks the wick and masks indications. Blast media drives grit and dust into the surface and into the flaws under inspection.

Heavy abrasive prep removes base metal and changes wall thickness, which corrupts ultrasonic readings and rejects good parts. Inspection prep needs a clean surface, not a reshaped one.

Why Laser for NDT Surface Preparation

search

PT and MT Ready

Clean, undisturbed metal for dye penetrant and magnetic particle inspection. No smeared metal closing crack mouths. No residue blocking penetrant wicking.

straighten

UT Compatible

No base metal removed, no wall thickness change. Ultrasonic readings stay true. The surface gets clean, not reshaped.

construction

Weld and HAZ Cleaning

Strip mill scale, oxide, and coating from the weld, the toe, and the heat-affected zone. The inspector reads the true condition of the joint.

No Media, No Smear

No grit driven into the flaw. No chemical film over the surface. The defect stays open and readable.

Inspection Documentation

Surface cleanliness verification, Laser Safety Officer report, and before-and-after photos with every job. Built to feed your QA paper trail.

Spot Cleaning Speed

Most inspection prep is a weld band or an inspection window, not a full surface. The laser targets the exact area with no masking and no containment.

How We Do It

The pulsed fiber laser lifts paint, scale, rust, and coating off the surface with no contact. The metal underneath stays at full thickness and the crack mouths stay open. Nothing smears across the defect.

No chemicals touch the surface, so penetrant wicks into open defects with no residue blocking the dye. No blast media means no grit driven into the flaw you are trying to read.

We mobilize to your shop or field site with the laser unit, generator, and HEPA fume extraction. We clean the weld, the heat-affected zone, or the inspection window, and hand off a surface ready for the inspector. Surface cleanliness documentation comes with every job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use laser cleaning before NDT instead of grinding or blasting?expand_more
Grinding and blasting smear soft metal across surface-breaking cracks and close the opening, which hides the defect and produces a false pass. Laser cleaning lifts the contaminant with no contact, so the crack stays open and the inspector reads the true condition.
Does laser cleaning prepare surfaces for dye penetrant inspection?expand_more
Yes. Penetrant inspection depends on dye wicking into open defects. Laser leaves no chemical film and no blast residue to block the wick, so indications show clearly. The surface comes out clean and dry with no solvent to flash off.
Will laser cleaning affect ultrasonic thickness readings?expand_more
No. The process removes coating and scale without removing base metal. Wall thickness stays unchanged, so ultrasonic readings stay accurate. Heavy abrasive prep removes metal and corrupts the reading. Laser does not.
Do you clean welds and heat-affected zones for inspection?expand_more
Yes. We strip mill scale, oxide, spatter, and coating from the weld, the toe, and the heat-affected zone down to bare metal. The inspector sees the joint with no masking and no surface damage from prep.
Do you provide documentation for the inspection record?expand_more
Yes. Every job includes surface cleanliness verification, a Laser Safety Officer report, and before-and-after photos. The package drops into your QA file for the inspection authority.
Do you work with third-party inspection firms and QA departments?expand_more
Yes. We prep the surface, your inspector runs the test. We mobilize to fabrication shops, structural steel sites, and field equipment across NJ, NY, and PA. We hold off in-service refinery and petrochem lines carrying flammable product.
